Level: All Levels Welcome

Preparing the surface of your wood before finishing is imperative if you want a great finish. If you don’t care then you’re probably buying off the rack dimensional lumber and slapping a thick coat of paint on it. But if you’re making fine furniture, there are steps you should take to smooth and prepare your wood surface for finishing. Join us Dec. 3rd for this Online Lecture to learn about these techniques.

Get information on planing, scraping and sanding wood. Which technique works the best? Which woods sand better? Learn how to raise the grain for water based and shellac finishes and how to fix dents, holes, and make patches in your project surfaces. Learn about how to sharpen a scraper and how to fill the grain of an open pored wood.

There will also be a brief discussion of stains including pigment stains, dye stains, and chemical stains. Learn how to make up a color sample board and how to mimic your finish using solvents. There is a ton of information to be had about surface prep. Bring your questions and open your mind to the possibilities.

This will be the first of three lectures on 3 Simple Finishes: Surface Prep, Oils & Varnishes, Shellac.
